Budapest Theaters Night 2026

Budapest's one of the most popular cultural events comes back to life, and on the threshold of spring, on March 21, the gates of the city's theaters will once again open to viewers as part of the Night of Budapest Theaters. This year's motto, "Choose us – let’s play together!" invites us to embrace the eclectic, vibrant theater world of the capital and to choose theater on this evening.

The Night of Budapest Theaters is one of the city's most exciting cultural spectacles: during the day, the audience can explore the spaces of nearly fifty companies and venues in the capital, from large, iconic institutions to independent playhouses. This year's programs are also based on the ideas and creative freedom of the participants, allowing the audience to experience productions and performances that are otherwise inaccessible.

The 2024 Night of Theaters – which returned after a five-year hiatus – proved that there is an unbroken bond between Budapest's audience and theater. At that time, a record number of 43 theaters joined the event, and under the motto "Everything in One," a vibrant, lively festival unfolded at various points across the city. The high participation rate clearly indicated that both the industry and the audience yearned for the event's revival. Organized by the teams from the Városmajor Open-Air Stage and the Crystal Theater, the renewed theatrical celebration featured behind-the-scenes tours, public rehearsals, late-night dance houses, city walks showcasing alternative venues, discussions and workshops, as well as an afterparty to conclude the event for the interested attendees.

This atmosphere is also the foundation for spring 2026. We hope that many will again long for shared, inspiring cultural programs, when the city's theaters not only open their doors but also offer a genuine meeting space. The Night of Budapest Theaters creates an opportunity for audiences and creators, different generations, regular audience members and theater newcomers, as well as the world of brick-and-mortar theaters and independent troupes – to come closer together, in a more relaxed format – to meet and share new theatrical experiences.

In this way, the Night of Budapest Theaters becomes the true opening of spring: a day when we can rediscover the city's unconventional cultural spaces, enrich ourselves with unexpected experiences, and collectively experience all that usually lies beyond the boundaries of the auditorium.
